Zigmont J. Karwoski, 91, of Hayward, died Sunday, September 30, 2012, at his home.

Zigmont John Karwoski was born January 6, 1921 in Hayward, the son of Steven and Pauline (Barnash) Karowski. Zig grew up in Hayward and graduated May 20, 1938 from Hill Side School. After school, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Camp Smith Lake as a laborer in reforestation until his honorable discharge in 1940. He worked as a feed blender for Northern Lakes Co-op until he was inducted into Company A 48th Engineering division of the Army September...

Zigmont J. Karwoski, 91, of Hayward, died Sunday, September 30, 2012, at his home.

Zigmont John Karwoski was born January 6, 1921 in Hayward, the son of Steven and Pauline (Barnash) Karowski. Zig grew up in Hayward and graduated May 20, 1938 from Hill Side School. After school, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Camp Smith Lake as a laborer in reforestation until his honorable discharge in 1940. He worked as a feed blender for Northern Lakes Co-op until he was inducted into Company A 48th Engineering division of the Army September 11, 1942. Pfc Karwoski deployed from Fort Sheridan, IL and served in Rome-Arno, Po Valley, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was decorated with European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/1 Silver Battle Star, 4 overseas service bars, 1 Service stripe, Good Conduct Medal and SO20 48th Engineer 44 District Unit Badge GO95 5 Army 44 Bronze Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged October 21, 1945. Upon his return home, Zig worked for the Co-op Feed Mill for 39 years until retirement.

He is survived by his brother, Stanley; sisters Kay and Anna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Steve, John, Tony and Theodore; sisters Marion, Babe, Rose and Bernice.
