Mary J. Harnden, age 95, of Hayward, WI passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Waters Edge Senior Living Community.

Mary Joyce was born March 29, 1919 in Hayward, WI the daughter of Joseph and Inga (Bushland) Dwyer. Mary was raised in Hayward and graduated from high school there in 1938. Mary received her teaching certificate at Superior Teachers College. Mary was joined in marriage to Ernest Warren Harnden. After her schooling she returned to Hayward where she began teaching for several rural schools including the BIA Indian School in Reserve, Lemington School...

Mary Joyce was born March 29, 1919 in Hayward, WI the daughter of Joseph and Inga (Bushland) Dwyer. Mary was raised in Hayward and graduated from high school there in 1938. Mary received her teaching certificate at Superior Teachers College. Mary was joined in marriage to Ernest Warren Harnden. After her schooling she returned to Hayward where she began teaching for several rural schools including the BIA Indian School in Reserve, Lemington School and the Boylan School. She then taught eighth grade English and literature at the Hayward Junior High School. While she was teaching, Mary furthered her own education by taking courses through the University of Wisconsin Superior where she received a Masters of Education. Mary taught in the Hayward School District from 1938 until her retirement in 1981. Education was Mary's life and she continued to teach as a tutor after her retirement. She was a 4H leader, avid gardener of flowers and vegetables and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward. She will be remembered as a dedicated teacher by many in the Hayward community.

She is survived by her three children, Jacqueline (Elmer) Corbine, Dennis (Sylvia) Harnden, Rosalie Bender, all of Hayward, WI; ten grandchildren, Carrie Bender, Brent (Sherri) Bender, Marge (Andy) Cameron, Mary (Duane) Carson, Erin Sparza, Amy (Jeff) Sexaur, Lee Corbine, Sheila Corbine, Laurie (Bryan) Schilling and Anthony (Theresa) Corbine; ten step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and seven nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest; son, Ernest; and two brothers, Wayne and Clyde Dwyer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Mary at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward with Father Philip Juza officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home in Hayward with a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning at the church. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
