Luverne Joseph Scanlan, affectionately known as Irish, passed away on March 31, 2012.
Irish was born to Josephine and Leon Scanlan in Lanesboro, MN on April 3, 1926. He served in the U.S. Navy after World War II and attended Winona State Teachers College. In 1948, he married LaVon Mary Dusbabek of Faribault, MN. Irish and LaVon spent their lives raising their 11 children in Lanesboro and Fountain City, WI where Irish taught industrial arts and woodworking, coached high school football and track, and enjoyed summers building log homes and hitting the links at the local golf courses. In 1985, Irish retired and moved with LaVon to Clam Lake, WI to the log cabin built by Irish along with his close friends and family.

Irish's love of sports was evident throughout his life. He coached high school football in both Lanesboro (1951-70), and C-FC (1971-85), winning several conference championships. His love for and skill as a golfer began at a young age. As a member of the Winona State golf team, Irish was on several championship teams in the late 40s and was the victor in many southeastern Minnesota open championships in the 50s and 60s. Irish passed his passion for golf on to many of his children and at the age of 83, he made his first ever hole in one!

Irish is preceded in death by his beloved wife, LaVon. He is survived by his 11 children: Susan, Thomas, Rebecca Konter, Barbara Dokken (husband Paul), Michael, Michele, Patrick (wife Sam), Timothy (wife Michelle), Peter, John (wife Claudia) and Mary; 14 grand children: Christopher, Brad, Whitney, Andrew, Debra, Jenni, Michelle, Paul, Eric, Maggie, Seamus, Piper, Isabella and Sophia; and six great grand children: Bohde, Alexis, Dezirae, Jayden, Mason, and Annalie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14th, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lanesboro, MN. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon and Irish wake will follow at the Lanesboro Golf Course.

Flowers may be sent to St. Patrick's Church; in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
