Leonard P. Nelsen, 91, of Cable, WI left this world Monday, September 17, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Leonard Peder Nelsen was born June 19, 1921 in Clinton, WI to Peder J. and Josephine (Holm) Nelsen. On December 18, 1945, he was joined in marriage to Dorothy "Ellen" Spears. During WWII, Leonard served as a Staff Sgt. in 341st Air Squadron in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941-1945 as a blacksmith/welder with tours in Africa, Egypt, Corsica and Italy. He earned the Legion of Merit Medal for his superior performance of duty by manufacturing an "extension cylinder exhaust stack" under adverse conditions, thereby allowing the inoperable grounded aircraft to fly again.

In 1948, Leonard and Ellen moved to Cable where they operated a small dairy farm and logging operation. In 1963, they began building a home out of granite and lumber harvested from this land he so loved. He later worked in the Maintenance Department at Telemark, as a stone mason for Mel Parker and later retiring from Andry Rasmussen Plumbing. Leonard possessed a talent for storytelling; he would entertain his friends with stories and jokes. Those who were present to hear those tales but did not know Len, soon became friends. Leonard was a gifted man who had the ability to master any trade or task put upon him.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy "Ellen" Nelsen of Cable, WI; children, Wayne W. Nelsen of St. Charles, IL, Betty E. Bahr (Frank Schuepbach) of McFarland, WI, Jo Ann (Randy) Stammen of Cable, WI, and Phyllis M.(Donald) Lane of Pewaukee, WI; grandchildren, Angela L. Brigham, Wendy S.(Karim) Abrouq, Jennifer L. (James) Anderson, Wayne L. (Jean) Nelsen and Amy L. Hunt; great grandchildren, Jessica L. and Andrew L. Fitzgerald, Leila, Nadia and Mimoun Abrouq, Kahlan and Cara Hunt, Cole Nelsen. He is also survived by his sister Marie Sandford; numerous nieces and nephews; and his 'best dog' Morgan. He will be truly missed by his family and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Grace Gillock, Phyllis Jacobs and infant sister Betty Nelsen.

A celebration of Leonard's life will be held from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, September 22 at the Cable American Legion Hall.
