Joyce K. Hockel, age 82, of Hayward, WI died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Water's Edge Care Center, Hayward.
Joyce was born March 10, 1930 in Melrose Park, IL the daughter of Mahlon and Gladys (Huffman) Karau. She was raised and attended school in Maywood, IL where she started piano lessons at an early age. In 1948 Joyce graduated from Proviso High School and was joined in marriage to George Hockel on January 30th in Crown Point Indiana. Joyce K. Hockel, age 82, of Hayward, WI died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Water's Edge Care Center, Hayward.
Joyce was born March 10, 1930 in Melrose Park, IL the daughter of Mahlon and Gladys (Huffman) Karau. She was raised and attended school in Maywood, IL where she started piano lessons at an early age. In 1948 Joyce graduated from Proviso High School and was joined in marriage to George Hockel on January 30th in Crown Point Indiana. Joyce worked at her mother's diner in Maywood and lived with and assisted her grandmother at her boarding house. Joyce and George moved to Algonquin and then Elgin, IL where Joyce continued to work as a waitress. In 1956, Joyce and her family moved to St. Charles, IL where they resided until 1973. George and Joyce purchased the Indianhead Resort on the Spider Lake Chain which they operated for several years. After selling the resort they moved into Hayward, WI where Joyce opened her store, Wood &Things, on Main Street. She operated the store for ten years before her retirement. Joyce was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward where she shared her gift of music by playing the organ at weekend services, weddings and funerals. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge and pinochle with her family and friends. She was a volunteer for the Physical Therapy Department at the Hayward Area Hospital and had a love of dogs, especially golden retrievers.
Joyce is survived by her six children, Claudia (Tom) Cahill of Antioch, IL, Ann (Dale) Schleeter of Hayward, WI, George "Paul" (Kimi) Hockel of Riverside, CA, John (Sheila) Hockel of St. Louis, MO, Scott Hockel of Tomah, WI, Tom (Stacy) Hockel of Wakesha, WI; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Sedgwick of Batavia, IL, Margaret Eiszner of Kalamazoo, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, George.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayward. Father Philip Juza will celebrate the Mass. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 29 at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home in Hayward, and again on Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
