James A. Langham, 63, of Stone Lake, WI passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Hayward Hospital after a two month battle with cancer. He was born June 19, 1949 in Rice Lake, WI to Roger and Marie Langham.
Jim attended the Hauer Country School through early elementary, then the Birchwood Jr. High and High School, graduating in 1967. Jim met his future wife while attending Birchwood Jr. High. He continued his education at UW-Superior where he was a member of the FEX fraternity. Jim was a successful all conference athlete in high school and college - basketball, football, and baseball. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education.
Jim married Patty Colbert August 14, 1971. They would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. After college, Jim accepted a position teaching K-12 Physical Education and coached in the Winter School System for 33 years. He fondly remembered many of his students and athletes. He coached his three children in sports but also taught them life skills; including "making wood", cleaning, painting, gardening, raking, etc. He believed in working and playing hard and was dedicated to doing his best and encouraging others to do the same.
The frequent family get-togethers always included Jim reminiscing about stories from his teaching and coaching days. When he retired in 2003, he and Patty moved to their "cabin" near Stone Lake, WI. He kept himself busy during his retirement by reading (often times, one full book per day), playing solitaire on the computer, cooking, freezing, canning, scuba diving, playing Farkle or card games with family and friends, hunting, fishing, planting trees, and making his lawn bigger and better.
Jim enjoyed growing, cooking, and sharing food with friends and family which included laughter, cocktails, music and playing cards or board games. He was known for speaking the truth, being quick- witted and helping those most in need.
Jim's immediate family was aware of the positive impact Jim had on the world but the massive outpouring of support and appreciation has been beyond belief. In less than two months, there were over 4,500 visits to his Caring Bridge site as well as hundreds of comments, texts, visits, calls, and messages inquiring about Dad. Even at the end of his life, his generosity was apparent because he was an organ donor.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Jim is survived by his wife of 41 years Patty, daughter Jody (Scott) Erdman of Eau Claire, WI son, James H. (Heather Erickson) Langham of New Auburn, WI, daughter, Erika (Aaron) Bucko of Minneapolis, MN, and his grandchildren Lola & Hudson Erdman, Brianna Kasbohm, and Baby Girl Bucko (due July 2013). He is further survived by his mother (Marie Langham) brothers, Tom, Ed, and Jerry; and sisters, Alice and Evelyn, many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close friends.
