Gretchen L. Burton, 72, of Hayward passed away Thursday, April 18, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN. She was born May 28, 1940 in Bowler, WI, the daughter of Theodore G. and Alice E. (Matz) Bartelme. Gretchen attended schools in Bowler and Clintonville, WI, graduating from Clintonville Senior High School in 1958. She began her working career as a secretary for AAL (Thrivent) Insurance Company in Appleton, WI. On September 23, 1961, she was united in marriage with Harold M. Gretchen L. Burton, 72, of Hayward passed away Thursday, April 18, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN. She was born May 28, 1940 in Bowler, WI, the daughter of Theodore G. and Alice E. (Matz) Bartelme. Gretchen attended schools in Bowler and Clintonville, WI, graduating from Clintonville Senior High School in 1958. She began her working career as a secretary for AAL (Thrivent) Insurance Company in Appleton, WI. On September 23, 1961, she was united in marriage with Harold M. Burton at St. Mary's Church in Bear Creek, WI. The couple's early years were spent living, working, and traveling around the United States as Harold completed his military service. Returning to Wisconsin, the couple lived in Appleton, Baraboo, West Bend and lastly moved and resided in Hayward since 1978. Gretchen was employed with Frontier Realty in Stone Lake and Hayward as a secretary for over 20 years. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and loved to travel. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hayward and served as financial secretary for 15 years. She did volunteer work for "Fishing Has No Boundaries", Stone Lake Area Historical Society, Sawyer County Hospice, and the Birkebeiner Ski Race.
She is survived by: Harold, her husband of 52 years, one brother, Thomas Bartelme (Special Friend, Joanne) of Fond du Lac, four brothers-in-law; Norman Burton, Russell (Vaugn) Burton, Roy (Marlene) Burton, all of Appleton, and Neil (Pat) Burton of Clintonville, three sisters-in-law; Ruth Shepherd of Clintonville, Rita Young of Shiocton, and Kathleen Happersett of Red Granite, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded by; her parents, Theodore and Alice Bartelme, father and mother-in-law, Melvin and Peg Burton, two sisters-in-law, Mary Bartelme and Ann Burton, and three brothers-in-law, Richard Shepherd, Delton Young, and Bud Happersett.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed to the Stone Lake Area Historical Society and the Sawyer County Senior Center "Sunshine Club". The family would like to give thanks to special caregivers Bonnie Dahlke and Vickey Glenzer for the loving care and attention they have given to Gretchen during her prolonged illness.
Honorary pallbearers are; Eric and Alan Bartelme, Bart and Brad Young, and Scott and Dean Burton.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10576 Gresylon Dr., Hayward, WI, with Rev Kenneth Hinrichs officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will be held at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
