Frank G. Shafarik, age 88, of Hayward, WI passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Golden Living - Valley of Hayward with his wife by his side.

Frank George Shafarik was born on the family farm on March 25, 1923 near Phillips, WI the son of Frank and Mary (Bartos) Shafarik. He was raised and attended school in the Phillips area and graduated from Phillips High School in 1940. Frank joined the US Army on August 14, 1944 and served during World War II. Frank G. Shafarik, age 88, of Hayward, WI passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Golden Living - Valley of Hayward with his wife by his side.

Frank George Shafarik was born on the family farm on March 25, 1923 near Phillips, WI the son of Frank and Mary (Bartos) Shafarik. He was raised and attended school in the Phillips area and graduated from Phillips High School in 1940. Frank joined the US Army on August 14, 1944 and served during World War II. While in the service Frank was stationed overseas and faught in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was honored with the Germany Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Frank was honorably discharged on July 5, 1946 and returned to Phillips, WI. He went to work hauling milk for Ladysmith Milk Producers. On June 7, 1946 Frank was joined in marriage to Bernice Hanson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Phillips. Frank began work for the Department of Natural Resources in Fire Control at Ranger Stations in 1949. In 1957 Frank and Bernice moved to Hayward, WI where Frank worked as a Forrest Technician for the DNR. He continued his work for the DNR until his retirement in 1982. Frank was one of the original members of the Town of Hayward Fire Department. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, cross country skiing, vegetable gardening and listening to polka music. He was a 65 year member of the American Legion and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernice; son, Tom (Mary) Shafarik of Hayward, WI; one daughter, Kathy Shafarik of Madison, WI; two grandchildren, Sam (Mary) Shafarik of Wausau, WI, Sarah Shafarik of St. Paul, MN; one great granddaughter, Melody Shafarik; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and seven sisters.
