Bertha Ekl, 91, of Couderay passed away at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake on Tuesday, November 10.
Bertha was born in Czechoslovakia on March 6, 1921 to Robert and Karolina (Stribrnska) Styskal. She was one of four children. At the age of 17, she immigrated to the United States in 1938, to join her father in Los Angeles, CA. She married Frank Ekl of Chicago, IL, on February 7, 1942. Bertha Ekl, 91, of Couderay passed away at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake on Tuesday, November 10.
Bertha was born in Czechoslovakia on March 6, 1921 to Robert and Karolina (Stribrnska) Styskal. She was one of four children. At the age of 17, she immigrated to the United States in 1938, to join her father in Los Angeles, CA. She married Frank Ekl of Chicago, IL, on February 7, 1942. Frank was working in Los Angeles at the time. On April 17, 1942 he was drafted into the Army, and Bertha moved to Chicago to be near his parents. Later her parents also moved to Chicago. Frank returned from the Army and they bought property on Ashegon Lake in Couderay. They built and operated Ashegon Lake Resort until 1970. Frank passed away December 14, 1971. After the death of her husband and father, Bertha and her mother moved into the village of Couderay. Karolina passed away in 1981. Bertha was a member of Homemakers, Garden Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She liked cooking, baking, handcrafts, and the friendships of many friends and family. She is survived by many nieces, and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, husband, Frank, two sisters, and one brother.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 10, at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church in Radisson with Fr. J. Patrick Hardy and Deacon James Frederick officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay. Memorials are preferred to Sacred Hearts Church in Radisson or the American Cancer Society.
