Audrey May Mattis, 88, of Stone Lake, Wis., passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2013.
Audrey May Rowlingson was born on February 29, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The daughter of Newell and Elsie Rowlingson, Audrey was raised in Couderay, WI. On October 25, 1941 she was joined in marriage to Francis Mattis of Edgewater, WI. They moved to Hammond, Indiana where Francis worked for Inland Steel and Audrey became a full time homemaker and mother. In 1943 when Francis went to the Pacific during the latter part of WWII, Audrey packed up their daughter Carolyn...

Audrey May Rowlingson was born on February 29, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The daughter of Newell and Elsie Rowlingson, Audrey was raised in Couderay, WI. On October 25, 1941 she was joined in marriage to Francis Mattis of Edgewater, WI. They moved to Hammond, Indiana where Francis worked for Inland Steel and Audrey became a full time homemaker and mother. In 1943 when Francis went to the Pacific during the latter part of WWII, Audrey packed up their daughter Carolyn and moved from Hammond to Birchwood, WI. on to Oregon and later rejoined Francis in San Diego. After the war they moved to Stone Lake where the rest of their children were born. Audrey was a busy homemaker and eventually became a part time postal clerk at the Stone Lake Post Office.
Audrey and Francis camped and traveled extensively when their children were little. After retirement they hit the road wearing out two motor homes. Audrey loved her children and enjoyed traveling, cooking, knitting, reading, dancing, and snowmobiling.
Audrey is survived by her beloved husband, Francis. She is also survived by her three children, Allen (Anita) Mattis, Larry (Carol) Mattis, and Susan Mattis Turnham (David), six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Margaret and Bernice, her daughter Carolyn, and grandson, Daniel.
A memorial celebrating Audrey's life will begin with a visitation from 10:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 on Monday, March 4 at St. Phillips Catholic Church in Stone Lake, WI. Interment will follow the service at the Evergreen Cemetery in Stone Lake. At the conclusion a gathering with family and friends will be held at St. Phillips for a light luncheon.
